The Shure SM-57 is a uni-directional cardioid (dynamic) microphone, sturdily constructed for use with high SPL sound sources.

We typically use the SM-57 on loud snare tops and bottoms.  However, it is such a general purpose mic, it generally sounds good on most sound sources, wherever all other solutions fail.
